As a Principal and Chief Investment Officer, Mr. Knauer oversees the Company’s investment efforts for the Western United States and helps direct the Company’s global investment strategies, policies and procedures. Mr. Knauer also oversees the Company’s Western regional office in Phoenix. Mr. Knauer has over 18 years of real estate experience and has participated, as a principal, advisor and agent; in the acquisition, ownership, development, management, renovation, and divestiture of over a billion dollars of real estate assets located in the Western United States and Florida.

Mr. Knauer was one of the first operating partners with Starwood Capital and played an instrumental role in helping Starwood's first opportunity fund, which focused on multifamily acquisitions, to achieve industry-leading returns for its investors. The properties were contributed to EQR in an “UPREIT” structure in exchange for stock. Mr. Knauer is a founding principal and C.E.O. of Summit Management, an apartment management and advisory company owned by Scott and his wife (Susan Knauer, President). Summit Management and its predecessor Granada Management have owned and operated over 10,000 units in the Arizona and Florida marketplace. Additionally, Mr. Knauer was involved in the development, acquisition and management of a number of large apartment communities in the Nevada and California markets. Mr. Knauer is a licensed real estate agent in the State of Arizona.
